Colchester and District Talking Newspaper provides local news and information, recorded onto memory sticks and distributed by post timed for arrival on or before each Saturday morning (subject to the Royal Mail delivery system). In addition there is a monthly audio magazine.
These recordings are prepared by volunteers for the benefit of blind and otherwise visually impaired people.
Suitable players for memory sticks are provided free of charge to recipients of our service by the talking newspaper.

Our monthly audio magazine continues to be produced and made available on the first weekend of every month both by clicking on the link below and it will be sent out with with the weekly news reports.

To access the monthly magazine recordings click here, and the same guidance as for the weekly news reading applies. The Audio Magazine is now produced in such a way that it consists of several tracks which should make it easier for those listening to do so for a time, then take a break at the end of a track and return to the following track as they choose. Previous editions of the magazine will not be retained after the month in which they were upoaded.

These recordings, both of the weekly news and the current recent edition of the monthly audio magazine using the Sonata box available from the British Wireless for the Blind Fund (BWBF), for those who subscribe to that service.

The objective of the Colchester and District Talking Newspaper, a member of the Talking News Federation, is to provide visually impaired people with local, Colchester, news and information.

Our recordings are also available on smart speakers including Alexa by saying "Alexa, find talking newspapers. Then ask for Colchester Talking Newspaper or Colchester Magazine".

The news is recorded from the newspaper used for the weekly newstape which is the The Daily Gazette, a newspaper produced in North-east Essex, the editor of which has given full copyright permission for its material to be used in this way.

It is compiled and duplicated each Thursday afternoon, and despatched on memory stick for delivery by first class mail on either Friday or Saturday mornings. It is also, as above, accessible via this web site or using the Sonata or Sonata+ box from the British Wireless for the Blind Fund (BWBF) fund.

The main distribution area for recordings is that area covered by the Colchester postcodes CO1 to CO7, with some recordings sent to other parts of the country where visually impaired people, usually people who have lived in the Colchester Area in the past, now live.

There are about 350 Talking Newspapers throughout the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland. To receive a recording from any of these, contact us and we will put you in touch with the appropriate TN group.
